How to Train Your Dog?

Have you heard that there is no better trainer in the world for your dog than you yourself? But as most of you might be totally new in training a dog, you might find it difficult. While training your dog, if the proper method is not followed, you might end up having a dog that is trained in commands but will follow them only when he feels like.

In order to avoid such a situation, here’s a set of Do’s and Don’ts to help you out.

Do’s:

  • Consistency – If you are teaching your dog a certain command, always follow and keep the same command. For example, if you are training your dog to follow your command and come to you and are giving the command as “Come”, then the next time don’t change the command to “Here” or any other thing. This will only result in your dog getting confused.
  • Patience – Learning a training process for your dog could be quite time consuming. But you need to maintain patience. You shouldn’t over stress your dog or yourself while training because if your dog senses any sort of stress, he’ll have a really hard time to try and understand your commands.
  • Praise – Your dog loves to get positive attention. It is a fact that, nothing else will make him as happy as he will be when he gets to know that his master is pleased with him.
  • Educate – Along with educating your dog, it is also very important that you should educate yourself continually about the behaviors of your dog in different situations. This will help you and the dog to work on the problematic behavioral problems and improve them.

Don’ts:

  • Repeat Commands – If your dog doesn’t listen to your command the first time, do not verbally repeat it over and over again. Instead show him what you want him to do when you give that command and then repeat the command again just a few more times. Then move ahead to the next command.
  • Train Too Long – Dogs don’t quite have a long span of attention or concentration. So it would be better, if you keep short time span for training period and avoid sticking to the same command for a long time. Everyone likes change, whether it may be us humans or our pet dogs.
  • Neglect Mistakes – If your dog makes a mistake, immediately correct him. It should not be that today the dog makes a mistake and you do not correct him, but when he makes the same mistake again the next day, you try and correct him. If you do so, your dog is sure to get confused.
  • Ignore – Always treat your dog as a part of your family and never ignore his needs or moods. This might make him feel that he is not wanted. Try and spare some time for him to love, care and play with him.

Although some of these dog training regimes might be a bit tough on you as well as your dog, but the key to get a perfectly well trained dog is just following the above guidelines. Have a happy time training your dog!
